Electoral watchdog Bersih today has urged Putrajaya to set up an independent audit committee to look into the country's electoral rolls.

In a statement, the non-government organisation said it is crucial to set up an audit body to ensure the integrity of the voters’ list.

The call was made after Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh highlighted alleged anomalies found in Election Commission's (EC) supplementary electoral rolls.

"Bersih refers to a media statement by Fuziah, who questioned the presence of suspicious names in the supplementary electoral rolls. There were names like ‘Deseased’ and ‘Expired’ listed in the rolls, which were suspicious, and coincidentally both names are from Johor.

"We urge the government, especially the prime minister, to immediately establish an independent audit committee on electoral rolls to check and audit it," Bersih said in its statement.

It also suggested that the committee must include all stakeholders, including the opposition, election experts and civil societies.

Earlier today, it was reported that PKR has flagged irregularities in the EC's electoral roll, ahead of the Johor state polls.

Fuziah, who is PKR election director, said among the oddities found was a voter whose name was listed as "deseased" (sic) and "expired".

Bersih also urged the EC and the National Registration Department to investigate the matter as they are responsible for registering voters' names into the rolls.
