Former Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam has apologised and expressed regret over his statements regarding Chief Syariah judge Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
This formed part of today’s out-of-court settlement of Na’im’s defamation suit against Lokman over postings on Facebook and YouTube regarding allegations of sexual harassment.
When contacted by Malaysiakini this morning, lawyers for both the plaintiff and defendant confirmed the consent judgment recorded before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Rozana Ali Yusoff.
Lokman’s counsel Logen Eskander confirmed that his client apologised and expressed regret to Na’im as part of the settlement of the civil action.
“Lokman said the alleged statement came about due to ‘misinformation’. Other terms and conditions of the order could not be disclosed as agreed by parties,” the lawyer said.
Na’im’s counsel Akberdin Abdul Kader also confirmed the settlement of the civil action, with among others that the defendant made an apology and expressed regret in the matter.
Deleted postings
Previously, it was reported that Lokman has deleted all of the postings, linked to the legal action, from his Facebook and YouTube channels.
Filed on Jan 17, Na'im’s defamation action sought an injunction order for Lokman to remove the video and the postings, and an injunction to prevent the defendant from republishing them.
The plaintiff, 54, filed the suit in his personal capacity against the defendant, 49, over allegations of sexual harassment against several women, including a "Datin".
According to the statement of claim, Na’im - who is also Syariah Judiciary Malaysia Department director-general - alleged that the defendant had defamed him through statements uploaded to two live streams on "Lokman Noor Adam Official" Facebook page on Jan 10 and Jan 13.
Live streams
The plaintiff claimed that the defendant also uploaded the live streams on his Youtube channel on Jan 10, and Jan 14 respectively, besides uploading three posts against him on Facebook on Jan 11 and Jan 13.
Na’im contended that the statements implied that he was a spiritual opportunist, failed to be a credible leader or set a good example for the community, and tarnished the good image of the Syariah Judiciary Department.
Earlier on Jan 12, it was reported that the police have launched an investigation of a senior judge after he allegedly sexually harassed a married woman in 2020.
The senior later lodged a counter police report against his accuser, claiming he was falsely accused.
