The toll from floods in Malaysia has risen to 14 with two more deaths while thousands of people remain at relief centres.

Johor, which is the worst affected area, recorded another victim who was swept away by flood waters on Friday, police said.

New Straits Times today reported another fatality in Kota Marudu in Sabah.

"The overall situation in Johor is improving. The weather is bright but we are still on standby," a police spokesman in the capital Johor Bahru told AFP .

The official said nearly 50,000 people seeking refuge from the flooding were sheltering in community halls and state-run relief centres in Johor.

"The worst affected areas are Muar and Batu Pahat districts where some key roads remain impassable due to the floods," he added.

No rain in two days

Razali Yahaya, chief inspector at the Kota Tinggi police station in Johor said there had been no rain in the past two days but "even though the flood waters are receding, their homes have been damaged. They need to clean their houses first before they can return."

Authorities claim losses from the floods could total millions of dollars.

Victims blame the flash floods, the worst in decades, on environmental degradation and poor development planning.
