A Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) lecturer who was caught on camera chiding a student for not being able to afford a laptop has been put on leave pending an internal investigation into the incident.
This comes two days after the university arranged a peaceful meeting between lecturer Roshana Takim and the student she berated, who was only identified as Yusof.
In a statement, UiTM Communications Department said the university's board of directors decided in a meeting yesterday to put Roshana on leave starting today.
"The decision was made to ensure the investigation can be carried out efficiently and in order," it added.
On the same day, UiTM tweeted that it organised a peaceful meeting between Roshana and Yusof two days ago (March 30). UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs) Mohd Sazili Shahibi, Perak UiTM student representative council, and Perak UiTM management members were also in attendance.
The tweet carried a caption that said "UiTM is committed to ensuring harmony between its lecturers and students".
Earlier this week, a video clip showing Roshana scolding her student for not being able to acquire a laptop for his study had gone viral on social media.
The video was believed to have been taken during an online class in the previous semester.
It caused outrage among netizens as Roshana was heard criticising the B40 income group which she claimed placed more importance on other things instead of education.
