Bukit Aman confirmed that writer Uthaya Sankar SB has been arrested over a social media post where he allegedly insulted Prophet Muhammad.
Police Criminal Investigation Department director Abd Jalil Hassan in a statement this evening said they are investigating Uthaya under Section 298A of the Penal Code, a law that stipulates offences related to creating disharmony and disunity, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of communications network.
"The police are conducting an investigation against the owner of a Facebook account 'Uthaya Sankar SB' over a posting uploaded on April 7, 2022 which has elements that insult the Prophet Muhammad," Jalil said.
"The suspect is a man aged 50 and he was arrested at a house in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam about 11.15am today to facilitate the investigation.
"Police also seized an iPhone from the suspect, which we believe was used to upload the (Facebook) post," he added.
According to Jalil, the police will seek a remand order against Uthaya tomorrow.
Uploaded on social media
Earlier today, Uthaya told Malaysiakini that he was taken to the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today allegedly in connection with a post he had uploaded to his social media.
Uthaya (above) said he would be interrogated there.
“I am being taken to Bukit Aman. Maybe arrested, maybe on bail,” he told Malaysiakini briefly.
On April 8, Uthaya took to social media to lambast actor Iman Zulkarnain, who was polygamous.
In his post, Uthaya associated the practice of polygamy with Prophet Muhammad.
He was referring to a Malaysiakini report on April 6, in which Iman said he did not want to continue living a polygamous lifestyle.
While Iman was initially confident he could act fairly in his marriages, he said it failed when emotions were involved.
Iman then advised men not to “deliberately look for trouble”.
He said that prior to polygamy, he was confident he could fulfil his responsibilities, including fairness in economic aspects.
