The opposition's walkabout session in Indera Kayangan today proceeded under the watchful eyes of an imposing team of riot police, irking a PAS leader who claimed it was done to intimidate voters.

The 30-odd Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) unit were stationed along Jalan Kangar, Pekan Lama, when Keadilan's candidate Khoo Yang Chong made his rounds with several opposition leaders.

It is learnt the riot police were scrambled when a commotion threatened to break out as the Keadilan delegation, which included party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, passed the Perlis Umno branch.

"The group shouted reformasi slogans and this may have annoyed Barisan Nasional supporters there," said a source.

The source, a BN supporter who wished to remain anonymous, added that police may accompany Khoo and his supporters throughout their walkabout session today.

However, PAS central executive member Dr Hatta Ramli, claimed the anti-riot unit was deployed to intimidate the people.

"This is one of the biggest polling centres, they (BN) must ensure they win here," said Hatta who was also part of the delegation.

He was referring to Pekan Lama, which is one the seven polling centres in the Indera Kayangan constituency.

Hatta said the meet-the-people session was a peaceful event allowed by election laws but despite this, fear tactics were employed.

"By doing this people are afraid to come out and meet Khoo," he added.

Unprecedented support

Meanwhile, the Keadilan delegation and MCA Team B supporters led by deputy president Lim Ah Lek and Youth chief Ong Tee Keat kept bumping into each other during their rounds today.

On several occasions, leaders from both camps greeted each other and shook hands. And when this happens, Keadilan supporters would chorus, 'Hidup Team B, Hidup Lim Ah Lek' (Long live Team B, Long live Lim Ah Lek).

At one point, Lim who was visibly embarrassed over the unprecedented support, reminded the rival camp that MCA has only one team.

However, the Keadilan supporters retorted, 'MCA hanya satu, MCA Team B' (There is only one MCA Team Team B).

MCA, the second biggest component party in BN, split into two camps following the party's acquisition of two Chinese dailies. Team A, which favoured the deal, is led by president Dr Ling Liong Sik.
