SRC appeal: Najib drops Shafee, appoint Zaid's firm

Lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s law firm Shafee & Co is no longer representing Najib Abdul Razak for the former prime minister’s appeal in the RM42 million SRC International corruption case.
In a letter to the Federal Court dated today, the firm informed that Najib has discharged Shafee’s (above) firm from acting for him.
“Please be informed that on July 25, 2022 around 5pm, our side received a letter from Najib Abdul Razak where the appellant has discharged with immediate effect Messrs Shafee & Co from acting as counsel and lawyers acting for him in the criminal appeals and related proceedings.
“Through the same letter, the appellant informed that he has appointed Messrs Zaid Ibrahim Suflan TH Liew & Partners as lawyers,” Shafee & Co said.
The letter added that the apex court can contact lawyer Zaid Ibrahim for any further clarification over the matter.
When contacted by Malaysiakini, lawyer Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee - who is from Shafee & Co - confirmed the contents of the letter.
Abuse of power
The Federal Court has set 10 days in August to hear the final appeal by Najib, who is also a former finance minister, to quash his conviction and sentence of 12 years in jail and RM210 million fine.
The conviction and fine are for one count of abuse of power, three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), and three counts of money laundering linked to RM42 million from SRC.
On Dec 8 last year, the Court of Appeal dismissed Najib’s appeal to overturn the 2020 ruling by the then Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali who found him guilty and imposed the sentences.
Nazlan has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal.
Previously a subsidiary of 1MDB, SRC later became fully owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated (MoF Inc). The 1MDB is also fully owned by MoF Inc.
Najib also used to be SRC’s adviser emeritus and chairperson of 1MDB’s board of advisers.
