Minister expects GE15 after Budget 2023

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today indicated that the next general election is likely to be called only after the tabling of the federal budget in Parliament.

In dismissing rumours that Parliament would be dissolved by as early as next month, Wan Junaidi said the rumours were likely spread by cybertroopers to fuel speculations.

“What is happening now, I’m very confident of one thing, it is that the prime minister is waiting for the budget.

“Because typically, politicians will draft a good budget, and then they will table it. The best would be for the budget to be passed,” said Wan Junaidi when met on the sidelines of the Singapore High Commission National Day reception in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

He said this when asked for comments on a viral image being circulated that claimed Parliament would be dissolved on Sept 1 and polling day would be on Oct 8.

“Once the budget is passed, the people have felt its benefits, then it would be the right time to dissolve Parliament,” said Wan Junaidi.

He added, however, that there are other considerations including weather conditions in certain states to hold elections towards the end of the year.

“But at the end of the day, it’s up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong because, under the Federal Constitution, the prime minister can seek to dissolve Parliament, but the Agong has the power to not dissolve Parliament,” he said.

According to the current Parliament schedule, Budget 2023 will be tabled on Oct 28.
