'S'pore, Malaysia' - Nat Geo UK's geographical error draws ridicule

National Geographic UK mistakenly identifying Singapore as being in Malaysia on its Facebook page has drawn ridicule from netizens.

An archive photograph posted on the page yesterday of the famous Singaporean landmark Gardens by the Bay described it as being in “Singapore, Malaysia”.

This prompted Malaysians to leave humourous comments on the post, most of which included a picture of a landmark and a caption describing the location wrongly.

Among those who left funny comments included Malaysian brands such as Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and comedic content creator MGAG.

GSC uploaded a picture of the inside of a theatre and described it as an “IMAX theatre built with vibranium in Wakanda, Johor Bahru”, referencing the Marvel movie Black Panther.

Meanwhile, MGAG posted a picture of the Telekom Tower with the caption “From the archive: Spiderman climbing up the Avengers Tower, New York City, Malaysia”, also referencing the Marvel cinematic universe.

Tourism Malaysia also commented, saying, “Dear sir or madam, that is Singapore. This is Malaysia,” and included a night photograph of the Saloma Bridge at Kampung Baru with the Petronas Twin Towers in the backdrop.

The post from National Geographic UK had even drawn the attention of Luyang assemblyperson Phoong Jin Zhe.

“Sabah and Sarawak be like: Welcome back, bro,” Phoong commented under the post.

He also noted that Singapore was part of Malaysia briefly between Sept 16, 1963, to Aug 9, 1965.

As of the time of writing, National Geographic UK has yet to remove or correct the Facebook posting.
