Former PAS supporters’ wing secretary S Barathidasan has joined Amanah as a party member.

Barathidasan (above) revealed that he had received his membership certificate from Amanah president Mohamad Sabu during the party’s national convention today at Dewan Utama Kelana Resort, Seremban.

He said his application was approved on April 15, 2021, after relinquishing all positions within the PAS supporters’ wing on Dec 31, 2020.

“At last, it is with great pride that I announce I am now with Pakatan Harapan. I will bear all the responsibilities and mandates of the party president as well as the party’s vision and mission.

“I am joining Amanah not wanting a position but to fight the symptoms of corruption, misbehaviour, and tyranny of the government,” he said in a statement today.

In December 2020, Barathidasan submitted his resignation letter to PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

However, his resignation was only confirmed in February 2021 as the PAS supporters’ wing only managed to convene a meeting then due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barathidasan had quit the party amid unhappiness over the party’s management of non-Muslim issues, particularly in Kedah where it leads the state government.

At the time, the Kedah government had been embroiled in controversy after it demolished a Hindu temple without consultation with the federal government. It also cancelled Thaipusam as an occasional holiday, prompting criticism from its own political partner MIC.

The PAS supporters’ wing is the non-Muslim section of the Islamist party.
