Muhyiddin to question Hadi on Muafakat revival rumours

Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said he will seek clarification from PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang next week, over rumours of the revival of Muafakat Nasional.

This follows an Utusan Malaysia report yesterday of a meeting Hadi (above, right) allegedly had with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi discussing the Umno-PAS pact.

“I have read that statement and I am also interested to know what actually happened.

“I want to get clarification when I meet Hadi this Monday or Tuesday. I will fix a date,” he told reporters on the sidelines of Bersatu’s sixth-anniversary celebration in Putrajaya today.

The Bersatu president said he is keen to find out whether such a discussion took place, its outcome and if Umno was agreeable to such an arrangement.

However, Muhyiddin said PN’s position would need to be taken into account as well.

It was reported that the alleged meeting between Hadi and Zahid took place on Tuesday (Sept 20), and a possible Muafakat revival will be brought to the Umno supreme council meeting next Friday (Sept 30).

PAS information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin was quoted in the report as saying there was a high possibility for Muafakat’s revival, adding that follow-up meetings will be held between PAS and Umno in preparation for the 15th general election (GE15).

However, this contradicts Muhyiddin’s stance today that all PN parties have agreed that its main enemy in the upcoming general election is BN.

Bringing ummah together

Earlier this week, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party’s “real” political enemies are Pakatan Harapan and its “big tent” allies, not BN.

He said PAS believed a coalition that brings together the ummah is the most effective formula to foster national unity.

He also claimed it was a strategy that most voters would accept with regard to forming a government that cares for the rakyat.

Earlier this month, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was quoted as saying that his party had decided to face the upcoming polls as part of the PN coalition.

However, several PAS leaders, including Hadi, have repeatedly claimed they were still in talks with Umno, which leads the BN coalition.

Some Umno leaders have denied Hadi’s claims.

Earlier this year, Selangor Umno mooted the idea of collaborating with the state PAS chapter but that failed to materialise.

Umno leaders have set the condition that any cooperation with PAS must be preceded by the Islamist party breaking ties with Bersatu.
