Terengganu Pakatan Harapan is expected to feature a line-up of new candidates in its quest to once again make a mark in the PAS stronghold state for the forthcoming 15th general election.

Its state chief, former Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad (above), told Malaysiakini the matter was raised in a recent meeting of the new Terengganu Harapan line-up that he continues to lead, alongside the Terengganu PKR new state chief, party vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

"In general, Terengganu Harapan will try to field new candidates and youth candidates for GE15.

"They will run with others who are more experienced to provide stability and maturity to our team.

"First-time candidates and young candidates will bring a fresh approach and more progressive ideas," said the Terengganu Amanah chief.

In GE14, Raja Kamarul Bahrin failed to defend the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat that he won on a PAS ticket in the previous general election. He also contested and lost in the Batu Buruk state seat.

He was later appointed as a senator and deputy minister under the Harapan federal administration, ending his term in July last year.

‘Ready to contest again’

Asked if he would once again contest in GE15 amid calls from within Amanah for senior leaders to make way for younger candidates, Raja Kamarul Bahrin indicated his readiness but will leave the final decision to top party leaders.

Overall, Raja Kamarul Bahrin said Terengganu Harapan will be fielding candidates in all eight parliament seats and 32 state seats.

"Terengganu Harapan will finalise its seat distributions soon.

"The majority of discussions are done, and we're only left with a few more seats to discuss," he said.

In GE14, Harapan, including Bersatu at the time, was wiped out from Terengganu at the hands of Umno and PAS.

The DAP did not field any candidates in Terengganu for GE14 and this time there will be an additional three parliamentary seats and 10 state seats previously contested by Bersatu.
