PARLIAMENT | Azmin Ali (Bersatu-Gombak) said in the Dewan Rakyat today that Perikatan Nasional (PN) would become the next government following the 15th general election.

However, he was met with laughter throughout the Dewan Rakyat for his response to Lim Guan Eng’s (Pakatan Harapan-Bagan) question on Malaysia’s ratification of the Comprehensive And Progressive Agreement For Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Lim had asked how CPTPP could be implemented if Parliament is dissolved today as it would need to be mandated by the new government.

“He (Lim) is concerned about how this can be implemented by the next government after the upcoming general election.

“I am convinced the next government to be formed will be PN. So, we will continue with this effort,” Azmin said.

Azmin then urged for Parliament not to be dissolved today, as more time is needed for economic recovery.

“But even if the election takes place and Parliament is dissolved, this agreement (CPTPP) would benefit the country and the rakyat. Whichever government that takes over, they are responsible for the country and the rakyat,” he said.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry announced yesterday that the cabinet had agreed to ratify the CPTPP.

CPTPP is a free trade agreement that links Canada, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

The pact removes 95 percent of tariffs between its 11 members.

Earlier, the International Trade and Industry minister told Dewan Rakyat that the CPTPP would come into effect on Nov 29.

Azmin added that Malaysia has fulfilled its obligation in the agreement by amending 11 laws.
