Former Bersatu strategist Rais Hussin's exit from the party is a sign that the party's future was not bright, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In a statement today, Zahid said Rais (above) was a clever strategist who can read the current political situation.

"If his party was still relevant and had a bright future, he would have stuck with Bersatu.

"More so if his party has strategic positions in the government, including in government-linked companies," said Zahid.

Zahid speculated that Rais had foreseen Bersatu's impending defeat in future elections and it could not be saved.

In view of this, Zahid urged Bersatu grassroots to reconsider their choices.

"To the Bersatu grassroots without a 'founder' or 'strategist' status, I wish to ask, when are you leaving Bersatu?

"Don't run en masse after losing the election. It would be too late by then," the Bagan Datuk MP added.

In a statement three days ago, Rais said he has been an inactive Bersatu member since 2020 and has been focussing on developing Emir Research as an independent think tank.

In June 2020, Rais was appointed Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chairperson. He resigned in October 2021.
