Sunday (October 16) has been declared a public holiday for Johor after the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football team won the Malaysian Super League for the ninth consecutive time tonight.

Johor state secretariat Azmi Rohani said Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar decreed the public holiday not only to celebrate JDT winning the Super League but also for winning 10 trophies in other championships this year.

“This special public holiday was also declared to celebrate Johor’s success in winning the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma), which is the first time since it started in 1986, with a total of 77 gold medals, far exceeding the target set, which was 55 gold medals.

“In addition, the state government would also like to extend its appreciation to several other sports events joined by the Johor team, who garnered success and won championships throughout 2022,” Azmi said in a statement tonight.

The public holiday is also meant to thank the people of Johor who supported the team in the various sports events this year, he added.

The special public holiday was declared in line with Section 9(1) of the Public Holidays Act 1951.

JDT defeated Sabah FC 3-0 in the Super League finals held at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor tonight.
