Negeri Sembilan GTA proposes ex-IGP Hamid to face Tok Mat in Rembau

The Negeri Sembilan chapter of Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) has nominated Abdul Hamid Bador to contest the Rembau parliamentary seat, where the former top cop would be facing Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

State GTA deputy chairperson Mohamad Jani Ismail was quoted by a Malay daily as saying that they have submitted the names of the former inspector-general of police (IGP) to the coalition’s top leadership for Hamid to contest in the forthcoming 15th general election.

Alongside Hamid (above, right), the state chapter also submitted film director Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri's name as a potential candidate for the Port Dickson parliamentary seat, which is currently being held by opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim.

“Both of them are on the list of names to contest the election as GTA Negeri Sembilan candidates that I submitted to the top leadership through Pejuang.

“Whether Hamid and Idham would be selected to contest the Rembau and Port Dickson seats, that would be determined by the party top leadership,” Jani was quoted by Berita Harian as saying.

Hamid was appointed as the IGP in 2019 during the Pakatan Harapan administration led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is now Pejuang chairperson.

Malaysiakini has sent requests for comments to Hamid on the matter.

According to Jani, the decision to nominate Hamid was made because GTA needed someone with huge popularity to contest Rembau, especially since the candidate would be facing Mohamad.

Mohamad was a former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar.
