Incumbent Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyatie Samsudin will be defending her parliament seat in the forthcoming 15th general election for Bersatu, which she originally won on a BN ticket.

Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin announced the candidacy - the first of Bersatu's candidates in Malacca - at the launch of the coalition's state election machinery in Kampung Paya Lebar, Masjid Tanah, last night.

"Tonight (yesterday), I'm launching Malacca PN election machinery and I accidentally mentioned the Masjid Tanah candidate, but it's okay because it so happens that I'm here," said Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, as quoted by Berita Harian.

Muhyiddin said Mas Ermieyatie (above), a deputy minister in the prime minister's department, was selected based on her service record, aside from proven integrity and meeting local demands.

"InsyaAllah, together with the election machinery, we will work hard to ensure Masjid Tanah remains with PN," Mas Ermieyatie was quoted as saying.

According to Berita Harian, the launch was also attended by Malacca PN state chief Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakop, Malacca PN deputy state chief Zulkifli Ismail and Malacca Gerakan chairperson Michael Gao Peng Lau.

As for other PN candidates, Muhyiddin said announcements will be made by PN state chiefs several days before official nominations on Nov 5.

During GE14 in 2018, Mas Ermieyatie won the Masjid Tanah seat on a BN ticket with a majority of more than 8,000 votes, before she left to join Bersatu later the same year.

Nearly three years later, BN went on to retain Malacca in the 2021 state polls with a two-thirds majority.
