Idris Jusoh to sit out GE15

Former Terengganu menteri besar Idris Jusoh will not be defending his seat during the upcoming Parliamentary election.

The 66-year-old incumbent Besut MP said he wanted to make way for someone younger and has been planning his exit from politics since 2013.

He said he stepped down as the Besut Umno division chief that year as part of his plan to gradually withdraw from politics.

"At the time, I told the party leadership (of my wish to stay out of elections). However, I abided by the party’s decision to continue serving by running for office," Idris (above) told reporters in Kuala Terengganu yesterday, according to Sinar Harian.

Idris was the Terengganu menteri besar from 2004 to 2008, a three-term MP for Besut and a two-term assemblyperson for Jerteh.

Under the Najib Abdul Razak administration, Idris was the second education minister and later the higher education minister.

He is currently the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) chairperson.

Idris said he was grateful to all the voters and party activists who have supported him all his while.

"I pray for Umno and BN’s continued success. I will also work hard to ensure BN performs well during the next election," he said.
