DAP told me to ‘disappear’ but grassroots want me to stay - Wong Tack
In a statement today, Wong said he was informed that the Pahang DAP leadership had refused to field him in the upcoming general election.
Incumbent Bentong MP Wong Tack today refuted claims by DAP leadership that he refused party orders to contest the Cameron Highlands seat instead.
In a statement today, Wong (above) said he was informed that the Pahang DAP leadership had refused to field him in the upcoming general election.
"I am to disappear from Pahang completely. There was a strong adverse reaction from the ground especially among Bentong party members upon hearing this news.
"They find the party's decision illogical. The team has worked hard over the years to serve the people," he said.
Wong said when he protested to the party leadership, he was offered the Cameron Highlands seat.
After declining it multiple times, party secretary-general Anthony Loke asked him to reconsider his decision, added Wong.
Confident of winning
Wong said he and his team had helped the people of Bentong navigate many challenges, such as the Karak fire in October last year and the devastating floods two months later.
"We have been hitting the ground running to help the people regardless of race, religion and political backgrounds the best we could.
"I believe many locals can attest to this. We are confident the people will give us the mandate again," said Wong.
Wong made history in 2018 when he unseated then-MCA president Liow Tiong Lai as the Bentong MP.
At the time, he was famous for leading opposition against the Lynas rare earth refinery in Pahang.
Wong stressed that he did not belong to any faction within DAP and was not interested in party politics.
"Politics must be about the people. It should not be a game of rhetoric, manipulations or hollow strategies just to win elections.
"It is time to plant the seeds to build a platform for real people's power in politics, and I hope it starts from Bentong," he said.
