Battle of Tambun: Umno aims to be 'giant killers'

The task to take down two “giants” - Anwar Ibrahim and Ahmad Faizal Azumu - in the Tambun parliamentary seat has fallen on the shoulders of Tambun Umno division chief Aminuddin Md Hanafiah.

While acknowledging that it be an uphill battle for him, Aminuddin pointed out that even heavyweight candidates had lost in the previous general elections, and declared that Anwar and Faizal would be defeated in the looming polls.

“It’s not impossible that they will lose in Tambun. We have the spirit to defeat them, although they are well-known individuals.

“We are the underdogs, we realised that.

“But we have been helping the community in this area and we are locals here,” Aminuddin (above) said at a press conference after Perak BN announced the coalition’s candidates in the state at Casuarina Meru Hotel in Ipoh today.

“So it doesn’t matter whether those contesting are giants or not… if they are ‘giants’, then, if we win, we are the ‘giant killers’.”

The former Hulu Kinta assemblyperson expressed confidence that the people of Tambun would be wise to vote for a representative who could serve them, rather than one who plays “rhetoric politics”.

“How does it benefit the rakyat if they only vote based on stories and offers that seem convincing but cannot be realised?” he added.

Aminuddin will be going against Anwar and Faizal in a three-cornered fight, or maybe more, in the looming 15th general election.

In the 14th general election, the Tambun election was a three-cornered fight involving BN, Harapan and PAS.

Faizal, a local in Tambun and who is fondly known as Peja, won the seat for Harapan by polling only 44.5 percent of the votes cast in GE14, while BN's Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, the incumbent, polled a close second.

Prior to this, Husni managed to retain the seat for BN by polling 56.2 percent of the votes in 2013.
