Kit Siang: DAP has never tried to control Harapan

DAP has never proposed any candidate for high office to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the Pakatan Harapan administration.

As such, there is no basis in “scary stories” about a “dominant” DAP calling the shots should Harapan come to federal power after the 15th general election (GE15), said party veteran Lim Kit Siang.

“The assurance by (opposition leader) Anwar Ibrahim that DAP would not be in control of Harapan if the coalition wins the polls shows both the degree of toxic politics of race and religion which had been disseminated in the election campaign and the likelihood of Anwar becoming the 10th prime minister,” Lim (above) said in a statement today.

His statement comes following the remark by Anwar that DAP will not control Harapan should the coalition be voted into power in GE15.

Speaking at an event in Ulu Kinta, Perak, last night, the Harapan chairperson said that DAP has been a faithful ally and accepts, as well as respects the Constitution.

The fact that the previous Harapan administration had an almost equal number of ministers from all its component parties shows that it was never dominated by DAP, Lim noted.

“The DAP had never aspired to have a Chinese or non-Malay prime minister, although the Constitution states very explicitly that any Malaysian can be a prime minister.

“The United Kingdom is having an ethnic Indian prime minister, Rishi Sunak, and even the United States has taken 200 years for Barack Obama to be the first black president, but I do not expect to see a non-Malay prime minister in Malaysia in this century.”
