Malaysian-born Syabira Yusoff bakes her way to the top

In a nail-biting finale, Malaysian-born Syabira Yusoff, a cardiovascular research associate, beat out electronics engineer Abdul Rahman Sharif and nanny Nelsandro ‘Sandro” Farmhouse to emerge as the Great British Bake Off Champion of 2022.

Syabira, 32, is the first female title winner in five years.

An early crowd favourite (as well as bookies' favourite), she moved to London in 2013 and took up baking five years ago.

Upon hearing her name being called by Matt Lucas as the winner of this year’s winner, Syabira described it as the “biggest achievement in my life”.

The judges, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, were impressed by her skills and flavour even though her final “show-stopper”, which was inspired by an Orangutan, tasted far better than it looked.

Syabira has won “Star Baker” (overall winner of the week) three times during the competition before the finals.

Previous winners of the Great British Bake Off such as Nadiya Hussain and John Whaite have gone on to host their cooking shows.

Others, such as Frances Quinn, Nancy Birtwhistle and last year’s winner, Guiseppe Dell'Anno, have gone on to garner a huge following on social media.
