MCA will not be political opportunists, veep says

MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker dismissed the need for his party to cooperate with DAP for the sake of the party’s political survival.

He said his party refuses to be political opportunists who do what is expedient for the sake of power.

“Every action we have taken thus far is based on the principles of political moderation and respecting the Federal Constitution, institutions, and traditions.

“MCA will not act solely to gain power, give empty promises, or bring down their opponents through slander based on provocation and political justification to seek opportunities to come to power.

“Instead, we are consistent and will respect and defend the fundamental rights of all Malaysians based on the provisions enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” Ti (above) said in a statement today.

He added that MCA is independent and will continue to move forward with fresh ideas on continuing the party’s struggles based on its principles and constitution.

Ti was responding to a report from a couple of days ago, where an academician had advised MCA to side with DAP so that the BN component party will be in a better position to win seats in the upcoming state elections in Penang and Selangor.

The former deputy minister pointed out that MCA is a big organisation with a long history and an open spirit.

“Like all political parties, we will face various political challenges and obstacles over time and in accordance with the current political landscape,” Ti stressed.

Even though MCA currently only has two MPs in Parliament, he assured that the party would continue to support and work with the government for the sake of political stability.

Ti also pointed out that his party can take lessons from others like PKR – which only managed to win one seat in the 2004 general election – but now is part of the federal government with its president Anwar Ibrahim serving as prime minister.

MCA can also learn from the experiences of parties such as Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRSM) or Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), which have existed and fought for their struggles for a long time even though they did not win seats for a lengthy duration, Ti added.
