MIC president S Samy Vellu attempted to serenade voters in the Machap by-election in Malacca to cast their ballots for the Barisan Nasional (BN).

According to Bernama , the veteran politician sang two Tamil songs, albeit incomplete, at a gathering of about 200 Indian voters, comprising mostly of housewives and grandmothers, last night.

Taking the microphone, Samy Vellu, in his usual straight talking and no nonsense style, called on the 1,403 Indian voters in the constituency to support BN candidate Lai Meng Chong in Thursday's polls.

BN proved itself

Lai, 56, will take on DAP's Liou Chen Kuang, 33, in a straight fight. The Machap state seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Poh Ah Tiam on March 15.

Meanwhile, Samy Vellu told the voters that the opposition had nothing to offer and BN has proved that it is capable of uplifting the standard of living of all Malaysians.

"The Indians too have benefitted a lot from the BN's policies and programmes," he said.

Pointing to several BN banners hanging on the wall, he asked the voters to cast their votes to the ' dacing ' symbol that represented BN.

At this point, an elderly woman stood up and told the MIC president that she had been voting for BN since she was 21, to which Samy Vellu replied: "I know that from your elegant smile."
