Johor MB proposes alternative mechanism to ease border congestion

Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has proposed an alternative mechanism to overcome congestion at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Iskandar Puteri.

He said the extraordinary congestion since yesterday occurred due to a combination of school holidays, public holidays and the weekend.

"Yesterday evening alone (June 1), over 258,000 travellers used the BSI route, and another 63,000 travellers used the KSAB route.

"To ensure this kind of thing does not happen again, I have asked the management of BSI and KSAB to consider opening contra routes.

“Specifically for travellers using footpaths and public transport, especially during the school holidays or long holidays," he said in a post on Facebook last night.

Onn said the counter route can be activated for inbound and outbound movement from the country during specific periods, such as school holidays or festive seasons.

"I also request Immigration Department, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Royal Malaysian Police personnel and People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) members ensure smooth flow of traffic out and into the country," he said.

Onn said this after checking on the congestion at CIQ BSI yesterday.

He also asked users of the Johor Causeway and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Line (Linkedua) to plan their journey to avoid getting caught in the congestion.

Several pictures of the congestion went viral on social media showing numerous people queuing up to enter the BSI.
