'1MDB-linked' handbags to go under the hammer

Forty handbags linked to the 1MDB financial scandal are in the process of being auctioned, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said.

She said that the assets were worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

RM83 million in funds and interests from various bank accounts have also been forfeited to the authorities, she added.

“Around RM66.96 million in funds seized by the police have been deposited to a special trust account under the Finance Ministry, while an estimated RM16.06 million seized by MACC has been transferred to the government’s revenue account,” she said in a written parliamentary reply to Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong).

Lim had asked the minister to state the value of assets seized and forfeited from the 1MDB scandal and what would happen to them.

Azalina said that the government, through the Attorney-General's Chambers, had filed an application for the forfeiture of assets under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds Act 2001.

In May 2018, the police seized multiple luxury items and presents during a marathon search operation at former premier Najib Abdul Razak's residence at Jalan Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur.

Also seized were four branded watches, 171 high-end handbags and 27 pairs of shoes, while 40 luxury handbags were confiscated on June 11, 2018.

On Aug 2, 2018, authorities also seized 27 Nissan Urvan vehicles.
