Dr M adds Syed Saddiq to list of threats to race, religion

In a case of mentor versus mentee, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has added Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to his long list of those who purportedly pose a threat to the Malays and Islam.
The 98-year-old former premier and the 30-year-old former minister had parted ways following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in 2020 but had refrained from mudslinging.
However, the gloves have come off in recent weeks.
This was after the Muda president censured the nonagenarian over his divisive tales about non-Malays wanting to change Malaysia’s name and that promoting a multiracial Malaysia is against the Federal Constitution.
Taking to Twitter this evening, Mahathir posted a brief retort which he titled “Syed Saddiq’s politics”.
“When the Sultan of Kedah reminded us not to forget history, Syed Saddiq is asking us to eradicate the history of our race and religion,” he said.
Mahathir also included a video of Syed Saddiq, where the latter said Muda would usher in a new breed of Malay leaders.
He said these leaders would not merely tolerate diversity and multiracialism, but also “embrace and celebrate diversity and meritocracy”.

“We believe that an attack upon non-Malays and non-bumiputera is equivalent to an attack against all Malaysians.
“Similarly an attack against the Malays is an attack against all Malaysians. Because our lives, our fates and our future are interconnected with one another, and are intertwined with one another.
“When we succeed, we succeed as a country together and when we fail, we fail as a country together,” he added.
Although Syed Saddiq did not mention “eradicating the history of the Malays and Islam”, he, however, promoted the concept of a more egalitarian society based on meritocracy, which Mahathir is opposed to.
During his recent trip to London, the former premier had cautioned Malaysians, including students, on the drawbacks of a meritocratic system, which he claims is being promoted again in the aftermath of the last general election.
“Because most of these students are studying in foreign countries, they were given scholarships to study although some of them did not fully qualify, but because the government was sympathetic towards them. But now that sympathy is no longer there.
“And again we hear about meritocracy. In a meritocracy, it is most likely that very few Malay students would get a scholarship. But not only scholarship, even in small businesses they may not be able to compete with the non-Malays,” he added.
