Elon Musk - chief executive officer of electric car giant Tesla Inc - has agreed to set up its headquarters in Cyberjaya, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said Musk agreed to the move when the duo held a virtual meeting today.

He also divulged that the topics discussed with the business magnate are “promising and convincing”.

“This is reassuring to drive the country’s economy. Therefore, Tesla’s entry into Malaysia will drive the country’s (EV) electric vehicle ecosystem.

“I gave my assurance to Musk. I have asked International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to offer space and to pay attention to meet their needs,” he said.

The prime minister said this in his speech during a 2024 Budget engagement session at the Finance Ministry today.

Meanwhile, Anwar said Starlink - one of Musk’s business entities - providing internet access and focusing on humanitarian issues was also discussed during their online meeting.

“Musk stressed that the future of mankind not to allow inequality to exist and to ensure there is opportunity for every citizen in the most remote parts of the country to get access to affordable internet.”

Starlink is a satellite broadband service developed by SpaceX which is available in 32 countries.

Earlier, in a statement, Anwar welcomed Tesla’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia and Musk’s willingness to visit the country.

"I would also like to congratulate (Tesla) and voice the government's support over the opening of the Tesla head office, as well as service and experience centre in Selangor recently," he said in a statement.

According to the premier, Malaysia will continue strengthening its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions as early as 2050.

Global internet network

He said the country had comprehensive plans, an ecosystem, and competitive resources to support the electric mobility industry.

"We also discussed SpaceX's participation in satellite service Starlink which can contribute to faster and broader internet access, especially in rural areas, which only require physical infrastructure and minimal land to increase the global internet network.

"This initiative will improve the ability and well-being of the people, especially from aspects of education and the potential of agricultural technology and income generation," said Anwar.

Tesla, an electric vehicle designer and manufacturer headquartered in Austin, Texas, US, will debut in Kuala Lumpur on July 20.
