The government has not made a decision on a foreign partner for national carmaker Proton while talks with German auto giant Volkswagen have yet to yield a response.

The government has been under intense pressure to announce details of a partnership for Proton with a foreign auto manufacturer in a bid to provide the ailing company with expertise to arrest a sharp decline in market share.

"No decision yet," Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop was quoted as saying by state news agency Bernama .

The government has so far missed two self-imposed deadlines to announce Proton's partner.

Previous talks with PSA Peugeot Citroen of France and Mitsubishi of Japan were unsuccesful. The government has said it will turn to US auto giant General Motors if the current negotiations with Volkswagen fail.

Asked whether there was any response from Volkswagen, Nor Mohamed said, "Not yet. I will let you know one day."

"Just give us a little time. We will resolve it," he added.
