STATE POLLS | In the lead-up to the Penang election, caretaker chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has promised that the Pakatan Harapan-BN alliance will resolve unfulfilled promises from previous manifestos.
Chow (above) said these pledges will be presented in a joint manifesto during an upcoming introduction event for all of its 40 candidates on Aug 1 at the Butterworth Arena.
“This time it’s special because previously, there was no cooperation between these two coalitions (Harapan and BN).
“This manifesto will be introduced as a coalition manifesto and the candidates will also be known as coalition candidates to show Harapan’s collaboration with BN,” he told reporters at a press conference in Penang today.
After forming the coalition government last year, there were already calls for Harapan and BN to combine their 15th general election manifestos to clear the air on their differences.
Last December, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli even said the cabinet has tasked Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali with forming a government committee to sift through the manifestos and pick which agendas to adopt.
Since then, with the effect of the Harapan-BN election machinery in all states awaiting elections, the alliances in Kedah and Negeri Sembilan have already announced they will present joint manifestos.
To kickstart activities for candidates
Meanwhile, Chow announced that as of today, Penang Harapan-BN will kickstart several activities and programmes for the candidates and the public.
This will include rallies in the candidates’ respective districts as well as a Jelajah Madani programme which will be held at two locations, in Seberang Perai and Penang island, on Aug 5.
The DAP leader added that these programmes will feature speeches by the top leaders of the coalition government such as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as well as Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“As per traditions, DAP will also be gathering tonight at 8pm at the Penang Chinese town hall to introduce its candidates to the public,” he added.
