Struggle in PAS not a family legacy, says ex-Chempaka rep

STATE POLLS | Representing the party to contest in an election is not a family legacy but rather the continuation of a struggle, said former Chempaka assemblyperson Fathan Mahmood.

Even with no names mentioned, Fathan's remarks at a ceramah in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, last night could clearly be understood as a reference to a statement by Nik Din Nik Mat, the younger brother of the late PAS spiritual adviser Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

"Prove that we're fighting for the party, not for personal gains. Our party is a party for all supporters of Islam and the struggle.

"The legacy in our party (PAS) is built on the struggle, not of family descendants," said Fathan (above).

Yesterday, Nik Din accused PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Abdullah of being the alleged "mastermind" behind a move that led to his nephew, Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, being dropped from contesting the seat once held by his father.

In a viral video, Nik Din said he was puzzled over how Nik Abduh was not fielded in Chempaka.

He said this was because he met PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on June 23 and was assured of Nik Abduh's candidacy in the seat once held by Nik Aziz as then menteri besar.

Nik Din also claimed that Amar, who is the Pengkalan Chepa PAS division chief, rejected Nik Abduh's candidacy as he did not want Nik Aziz's descendants to strengthen their base in the area.

Nik Din further urged voters to reject Amar in Panchor, where the former Kelantan deputy menteri besar is defending his seat for the fifth term.

In the 2018 general election, Fathan won the Chempaka seat against another son of Nik Aziz, Nik Omar - who contested on an Amanah ticket - as well as BN's Mohamed Fareez Noor Amran.

Looking forward, Fathan last night reminded PAS members to prepare themselves and hope the party will give them the right opportunity.

"It is not for us to make demands and place ourselves in a position as if we've come down from the sky for others to lift us up on a throne that we see ourselves on.

"When actually we have no value in the eyes of others," he said.

This time, PAS fielded newcomer Nik Bahrum Nik Abdullah to replace Fathan, who at the time succeeded the late Nik Aziz, in Chempaka.
