Umno vice-president Johari Abdul Ghani has asserted that the party needs to review its management approach.
He said the recent poor election results suggested losing Malay support for the party.
The Titiwangsa MP emphasised that Umno should evaluate its existing structure's ability to appeal to the Malay electorate before the 16th general election.
He also called upon party leaders to accept accountability for Umno's significant defeat in the recent legislative assembly elections, where it only secured 19 out of the 108 seats it contested across six states.
“In my view, all Umno leaders, including the top five (the president, deputy president and three vice-presidents), supreme council leaders, divisional leaders in every state and the Wanita, Puteri and Youth chiefs must take responsibility for the loss.
“I personally, despite being a vice president for five months, take responsibility for the losses,” Johari was quoted as saying by FMT.
No longer pertinent
The six state elections yesterday saw Umno win a mere 19 state assembly seats across Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, and Kelantan.
The party also recorded its worst performance by failing to wrest or retain any seats it contested in Terengganu and Kedah.
However, it secured 14 seats in Negeri Sembilan and two seats each in Penang and Selangor. In Kelantan, the party only won the Galas state seat.
The Pakatan Harapan-BN alliance retained Selangor, Penang, and Negeri Sembilan, whereas its rival coalition, Perikatan Nasional, secured Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Johari noted that Umno must acknowledge the diminished Malay support in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Addressing those who claimed that Umno is no longer pertinent to the Malay community, he pointed out that a majority of the seats held by PN were secured by PAS rather than Bersatu, which lost 40 out of the 79 seats contested.
