M’sian student Taipei murder: Family to receive RM262k compensation

The family of a Malaysian student murdered by a Taiwanese man is set to receive NT$1.8 million (RM262,593).

The victim's family sought compensation through the Victims Support Association, which followed up with the family and provided legal assistance.

The case involves Chai, a university student who last year ended up murdered after less than a week of dating Chen Po-Yen, whom the deceased met on Instagram.

Bernama yesterday reported what the Shilin district prosecutor’s office told Taiwan's Central News Agency regarding the development.

During a conference in late August, the Shilin district prosecutor’s office set the sum per the Crime Victim Rights Protection Act.

Chai, who was 24 when she died, was enrolled at a Taipei university.

Her body was discovered in her rented apartment on Dadong Road in Taipei's Shilin district on Oct 13, 2022.

Three days later, an autopsy revealed that Chai had suffocated to death, and her neck was broken.

During the investigation, prosecutors said they found that Chen strangled Chai's neck with his bare hands until she died of suffocation while using a pillow to cover her eyes.

Chen’s confession

The Taipei police on Oct 13 last year brought to light the student's murder when Chen revealed that he had killed her while being taken to the hospital, in what authorities at the time believed to be a suicide attempt.

When Chen was discharged from the hospital on Oct 17, he was arrested and held by police for questioning in the case.

According to the police, he later confessed to killing Chai, whom he had been dating for less than a week.

He however claimed it was an accident, alleging that he only intended to scare her after failing to convince the victim to pay him NT$99,999.

Besides studying, Chai was also working part-time as a model and live streamer on social media.

The couple got to know each other in April last year via Instagram and began dating a few months later on Oct 7.

Prosecutors contended they later found that Chai told her friends the day before her death that she was having second thoughts about dating Chen.
