Mahathir in Kemaman? PAS says no decision on candidate yet

PAS has denied claims that it will field former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a candidate in the upcoming Kemaman by-election.

Its vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the party has yet to discuss potential candidates for the parliamentary seat.

“No discussions so far and we have actually not yet sat down among the top leadership about our preparations for the by-election, especially on deciding a candidate.

“We don’t even have a date to discuss (the candidate) yet, maybe next week I will go to Kuala Lumpur,” he was reported as saying by Utusan Malaysia today.

An earlier report claimed that a source close to Mahathir said PAS may field the nonagenarian as its candidate for Kemaman.

Mahathir was recently appointed as the unofficial adviser to the four Perikatan Nasional-led states.

Samsuri, who is also the Terengganu menteri besar, said PAS has no plans of fielding a candidate from Bersatu as Kemaman has traditionally been the Islamist party’s seat.

They may even consider incumbent Che Alias Hamid to contest the seat again.

Che Alias won the Kemaman parliamentary seat in the 15th general election with a 27,179 vote majority.

The Election Court nullified the GE15 Kemaman results on Sept 26 due to elements of corruption during the electoral campaign.

PN has also decided not to appeal the decision.
