Convicted killer and necrophiliac released from jail
Convicted murderer and necrophiliac John Nyumbei has been freed from jail after succeeding in a review of his natural life imprisonment sentence.
According to Free Malaysia Today, the Federal Court reduced his sentence to 40 years’ imprisonment yesterday.

John, who had been incarcerated since his arrest on March 18, 1993, was allowed to be freed because the one-third remission meant he only had to serve 26 years in jail.
He filed for revision of his sentence under the Revision of the Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of the Federal Court) Act 2023 legislated by the Anwar Ibrahim administration.
The law came into force on Sept 12, allowing 1,020 prisoners on death row or serving a natural life imprisonment sentence to apply for a review within 90 days.
Applicants are able to hire their own lawyers, use court-appointed lawyers, or those from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
On Nov 14, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said said 861 applications had been received from prisoners on death row and 112 from those serving life imprisonment.
As of Nov 9, the Federal Court has received 861 applications from death row inmates and 117 applications from inmates sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to FMT, John was sentenced to death on April 4, 1997, for the murder of Jong Liu Chin, 18, on March 16, 1993.
During the course of the trial, it was established that the accused committed necrophilia and decapitated his victim.
The Federal Court bench that allowed John’s revision comprised judges Zabariah Yusof, Rodzariah Bujang, and Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil.
