Cops: Man who was run over by train had jumped on tracks

The 27-year-old man who died when he was run over by a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train at the Dato’ Keramat LRT station yesterday, went down to the track on his own accord, police said.

Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah said police received a report on the incident at about 10.56pm, from an auxiliary police officer.

“Checks found that the victim, a local, was waiting for the LRT on platform 1, with the other passengers.

“When the train was approaching the platform, the man suddenly jumped onto the track, causing him to be run over by the train,” Harian Metro quoted Ashari saying in a statement.

Earlier, Bernama reported that the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 9.05pm about the incident.

KL Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Fabell Md Yasin said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers.

“Efforts to extricate the victim was done with the cooperation of the LRT technician who managed to reverse the train to enable firefighters to remove the victim’s body from the LRT track,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd in a statement yesterday said following the incident, services to the Kelana Jaya route were disrupted and passengers were delayed.

The statement added that alternative rail services, including support bus services, were activated to assist the commuters.

“Rapid Rail will cooperate and work with the authorities to investigate the incident.

“We wish to apologise for any inconveniences caused due to the incident.”
