Wait until next polls if you want to change govt - Mat Sabu

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu has expressed confidence that the coalition government will last until the next general election.

Therefore, he urged those eager to change the government of the day to wait until the next polls.

"Governments are meant to be changed via elections.

"(Those wanting to change the government) can campaign now, and if they can take over in the next general election, there's no problem," the Kota Raja MP told reporters at the Amanah Convention in Bachok, Kelantan, today.

Mohamad, who is also agriculture and food security minister, was responding to continuous remarks by PAS leaders that the coalition government needs to be toppled.

Mohamad (above) said the country is not prepared to face another political crisis akin to the Sheraton Move in 2020, which saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"To me, the Sheraton Move was a disaster in the country's politics.

"When the government changed and Muhyiddin Yassin became the prime minister, he was soon replaced by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"And then, there were attempts to change Ismail Sabri with someone else," he recalled.

Certain quarters

According to Mohamad, who is fondly known as Mat Sabu, certain quarters, whom he refused to identify, met him (and other then opposition leaders) to discuss the matter.

"We didn't want the government to change, and we signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) that the Ismail Sabri administration will last until the (15th) general election," Mohamad said.

The infamous 'Sheraton Move' saw several PKR and Bersatu MPs leaving the Harapan government after only 22 months in power, to establish a new administration with the support of Umno, PAS, and GPS.

However, Muhyiddin's government only lasted for 17 months, after a few Umno lawmakers withdrew their support for the former, which then led to his resignation and being replaced by Ismail Sabri.

Ismail Sabri then made an MoU with Harapan to ensure his government would not be changed until the 15th general election.
