IGP: Those with numbers would have met king or pushed for confidence vote

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain is puzzled why a declaration that the opposition has enough numbers to form a government is coming from those with no locus standi, and not party leaders.

He said if the allegations were true, there would have already been a public move.

"If it’s true (there are numbers to change government), the party chief or secretary-general would have brought (the evidence) to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"Or they would have revealed it in Parliament, saying they had such numbers or call for a vote of confidence or no confidence," Razarudin said at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.

He said this while saying that the police had opened investigation papers over the purported plot to oust the government.

The main suspect, he said, was fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin who claimed last week that the opposition now had the support of 120 MPs.

Razarudin said if the announcement was made by a party chief or secretary-general, then it would be a different matter.

"They have the authority to say such things.

"But this is someone without authority, without locus standi speaking," he said.

He stated that such claims threatened stability and could even spook investors.

Besides Raja Petra and party operatives, one notable person who claimed that there are enough statutory declarations to form a new federal government is Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who is also the PAS election director.

It is unclear if police will also be questioning Sanusi as part of their probe into the change of government allegations.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong earlier today assured that the palace would not partake in any political machinations.

Meanwhile, the next king, to be sworn in on Jan 31, is not taking any audiences.

Parliament will convene in late February.
