A Bersatu lawyer has taken issue with Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain’s remarks regarding purported plans to change the government.

Bersatu legal and constitution bureau deputy chief Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif said the top police officer should not be meddling in politics.

Razarudin yesterday questioned why the coup rumours were coming from those without locus standi instead of party leaders.

Further, he said if the allegations were true, party leaders would have met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or called for a vote of confidence to prove their numbers.

“This is very disturbing coming from the inspector-general of police,” Sasha said in a statement today.

“Why is the head of police meddling with and or allowing himself to be embroiled in political issues?

“It is no business of the police whether MPs choose to withdraw support from Anwar (Ibrahim) as PM,” she added.

The Bersatu leader said Malaysia is not a police state and democratic processes are laid out under the Federal Constitution.

Intimidation tactic?

Sasha further questioned whether Razarudin’s remarks were an intimidation tactic by the Pakatan Harapan-led government against the opposition.

Police yesterday said they were duty-bound to investigate the purported political coup to safeguard national stability.

The investigations are being carried out under Section 124C of the Penal Code for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

Sasha argued that MPs withdrawing support from the prime minister is a constitutional right.
