Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been urged to suspend Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan pending an investigation against him by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA).

Apart from this, PKR Youth also called for the setting up of a royal commission to probe the allegations against the police chief.

This is a serious matter and requires immediate action, said the opposition Youth wing's deputy chief Fariz Musa in a statement today.

"PKR Youth sees no reason why Musa should not be relinquished of his post when (PKR de facto leader) Anwar Ibrahim was sacked as deputy prime minister (in 1998) even before he was found guilty in a court of law.

"If the government is consistent and transparent, then it should employ the same measure against Musa, by at least suspending him (until the investigation is completed)," he added.

Triad-link allegation

Yesterday, Deputy Internal Security Minister Mohd Johari Baharum said he had instructed his officers to lodge the ACA report following allegations of corruption against Musa that surfaced on the Internet.

Replying a supplementary question by Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian) in Parliament, Johari said he had contacted Bukit Aman for clarification.

Political blog site Malaysia Today had posted a report linking Musa and the police with Chinese underworld figures.

Musa, whose service contract was extended to September, was alleged to have received RM2.1 million for releasing a group of gangsters from custody.

The police chief had since told the media that he was not worried and described the allegations as " slander ."

Meanwhile, Fariz said allowing Musa to continue serving would have serious and negative implications on the security of the country as there exist allegations that the police chief is in cohorts with the underworld.

"PKR Youth will submit a memorandum to Yang DiPertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin to express the people's concern and the need to form a royal commission of inquiry," he added.

He said the people are growing anxious over the rising crime rate and Abdullah must prove that he is not a weak leader by suspending Musa.

No case against Johari

Meanwhile, Attorney-General Abdul Cani Patail has ordered ACA to close its investigation into allegations that Deputy Internal Security Minister Johari received RM5.5 million for the release of three underworld detainees, who were being held without trial under the Emergency Ordinance.

He said that the decision to close the case was because the agency was unable to find any witnesses to link Johari to the alleged bribe.

According to the ACA, the three gangsters who were involved in the controversy had all denied giving money to Johari.

Gani added that several criminals who were crucial witnesses could not be found after their release.
