PAS vice-president Husam Musa has urged Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to advise Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Musa Hassan to resign from his post.

"If that is not possible, PM must put his foot down and take appropriate action similar to his (IGP) resignation," said Husam in his letter to Abdullah.

The request was made following Deputy Internal Security Minister Johari Baharom's move to lodge a report with ACA on the allegations of corruption against Musa.

In the letter that was made available to malaysiakini , Husam also expressed his regret on the extension of Musa's service contract.

"It is saddening to know that PM has extended Musa's tenure. And the extension took place after the report was lodged," he said.

Husam said that the report against Musa needs serious attention as it also threatens the nation's security.

"The Internal Security Ministry's action to lodge this report is a serious issue and can result in the public losing confidence in the IGP," he said.

"It is even worse at this juncture where the whole country is facing increase in crimes. In Johor, as we know, the citizens had to demonstrate to attract the government's attention," he added.

"At first, Musa was alleged to have protected criminals and now the allegation has turned into a report. How chronic is the situation in our country," he asked.

'Poor screening system'

Husam also critised Abdullah for not having an effective screening system

"How can his (Musa) contract be extended when your own ministry has lodged a report against him with ACA? This is strange," he said.

On Tuesday, Johari said that he has instructed his ministry to lodge a report with ACA following allegations of corruption against Musa that surfaced on the Internet.

However, Musa dismissed the allegations as mere 'slander', and had since told the media that he is not worried.
