Cops arrest 7 suspects over riot at Ramadan bazaar

Police have arrested four men and three women in relation to a riot that occurred at a Ramadan bazaar at a housing area in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

A plastic chair and a fork lock were confiscated as part of the investigation, said Petaling Jaya district police chief Shahrulnizam Ja’afar in a statement.

"All suspects were brought to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate Court today and requested them to be remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code until tomorrow.

"The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for being in possession of deadly weapons in a riot - which carries a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine, or both,” he said, adding the suspects’ age ranged from 20s to 40s.

According to Selangor TV, Shahrulnizam was quoted as saying that a misunderstanding had occurred between a man who sold popiah and a woman who sold watermelon juice.

The man was said to be unhappy over the woman allegedly entering the bazaar site for male traders.

As a result, the man was alleged to have assaulted the woman with an iron rod, resulting in a commotion.

While the duo intended to settle the matter amicably due to their long-time association, it was alleged that the man’s son later attacked one of the woman’s family members, who was also a trader at the bazaar, resulting in a riot.

Meanwhile, Shahrulnizam said that based on past records, police found that:

• One suspect held a record involving a drug offence,

• Another had two drug offences and one criminal offence,

• One had two drug offences,

• Another had three past records and one criminal offence.
