The police have detained a man believed to be responsible for recording a video depicting the destruction of temple figurines in Manjung, Perak.

Manjung district police chief Mohamed Nordin Abdullah said the 35-year-old lorry driver was arrested at 9.30pm yesterday.

“We received the viral video showing a man destroying the temple figurines at a temple in Kampung Koh, Manjung at 1.30pm on the same day.

“We arrested the suspect at his place of work and seized his mobile phone, which is believed to have been used to record the video,” Nordin said in a statement today.

He said the suspect, who previously worked in the army, would be brought to the Teluk Intan Magistrates’ Court for a remand request.

“He has a mental illness but is not a disabled (OKU) card holder,” he added.

On Friday, a video showing a man kicking figurines at a temple was uploaded onto social media platform X.

In the video it appears as if the individual shooting the video is the man attacking the figures.

The case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with the intent to insult the religion.

The offence is punishable with a maximum jail term of two years, a fine, or both.

Nordin added that the incident is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities.

Upon conviction, Section 223 of the CMA carries a maximum jail term of one year, an RM50,000 fine, or both.
