Education Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said today that a major revamp in pre-schools and primary schools is expected to be implemented by 2010.

This is to adopt a more holistic curriculum in the early stage of learning, he explained.

This was based on the findings of the Malaysian Examination Syndicate's two-year survey reviewing the current school curriculum, examination system and teaching methods.

The findings were discussed in a meeting he chaired on Friday, according to Bernama.

Too exam oriented

"There are many complaints that our system is too exam-oriented. I agree with that. Now, we have to decide what kind of Malaysian students we want to send to Form One.

"As a father, I would want my children to master at least two languages, Bahasa Malaysia and English. If they can master more, so much the better because language is a critical ingredient," he added.

Hishammuddin also stressed that to develop students with high moral fibre, they should be instilled with values such as patriotism, integrity and toleration.

"This can prepare them to face issues such as drug abuse and Mat Rempit."

And to make it more employable, he said that they need to be equipped with innovative, creative and marketing skills which could help overcome the current unemployment problem among graduates.

"All these elements would be integrated in the school curriculum and co-curriculum in the revamp," the minister said.
