Lawyer representing Zayn Rayyan's parents withdraws from case

The lawyer representing the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin - the six-year-old autistic boy who was murdered in December, has withdrawn himself from the case.

According to Mahmud Jumaat from the law firm Emir Mahmud & Co, he decided to concentrate on other cases he is currently handling.

"I hope this case will proceed smoothly according to the legal process.

"As a legal practitioner, I urge all parties to respect the rule of law and not make wild speculations regarding this case," Berita Harian quoted Mahmud (above) in a statement today.

Mahmud's withdrawal comes just days after he was appointed by the family of Zayn Rayyan's parents, following the couple's arrest in Puncak Alam last Friday.

The couple, both 28, are in remand until June 7 to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder).

New lawyer appointed

Zayn Rayyan was found dead by a river about 200m from his home in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya, at around 10pm on Dec 6.

His body was discovered by a member of a search party formed to find the boy, who reportedly went missing on the afternoon of Dec 5.

Police initially suspected that the boy had drowned, but reclassified their investigation to murder after a post-mortem revealed that he was strangled.

Meanwhile, Harian Metro reported Zayn Rayyan's grandfather Zahari Mohd Reba as saying he has appointed a new lawyer for the case.

He refused to divulge further details.
