The police have been urged to investigate the doctor who allegedly treated drama actress K Sujatha before she died under mysterious circumstances in late June.

In a police report filed with the Brickfields district police headquarters today, PKR supreme council member S Manikavasagam said the doctor had been in charge of Sujatha since June 19 until she died a week later.

Manikavasagam, who claimed to be representing Sujatha's family, said the doctor must account for why the actress was transferred to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang, some 40km away from her house in Sentul.

"He must explain why she was transferred to Klang when she could have been treated at Hospital Kuala Lumpur," he added.

Sujatha, 29, reportedly died from self-poisoning - believed to be due to paraquat consumption - on June 25.

Following doubts raised on the circumstances and investigations of the death, the case has been transferred from the Sentul district police headquarters to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.

'Strong evidence'

Speaking to reporters after lodging the report, Manikavasagam also alleged that the doctor is related to MIC president and Works Minister S Samy Vellu.

The minister's son S Vell Paari, for whom Sujatha had worked for as a private secretary, was implicated in the case. He has since denied any involvement and threatened to take legal action against those who made the accusations.

Apart from this, the PKR leader also claimed that mortuary attendants saw cuts on the deceased's face and body.

He also alleged that close-circuit television footages at the deceased's apartment would show the identities of those who took Sujatha to the hospital.

Manikavasagam also claimed that numerous individuals linked to the minister had tried to persuade him to drop the matter

Asked about his links with Sujatha's family, the PKR leader said he was provided with "strong evidence" by her family members regarding the possibility of foul play in the case.

However, he insisted that the evidence would only be handed to the police if the Bukit Aman police headquarters takes over the probe.

Contacted today, Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC II Ku Chin Wah confirmed that his men had visited Sujatha's apartment for investigation purposes but did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, Sentul district police chief ACP K Kumaran has today filed a RM10 million law suit against Manikavasagam and Tamil daily Makkal Osai .

This is in relation to alleged 'defamatory' remarks in a news report published in the daily on July 4 pertaining to Sujatha's death.
