Organisers unfazed by police probe, anti-Anwar rally to proceed next week

The “Rakyat Lawan Anwar” protest planned for June 29 in front of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official residence the Seri Perdana Complex will proceed, said the organisers.

Demi Negara movement spokesperson Aidil Yunus said they remained unfazed by the “intimidation” from the government through a probe against him and two organising committee members, namely veteran singer Dayangku Intan and influencer Siti Zulaikha Olivia.

“Anwar had asked the people to take it to the streets if the price of petrol was not reduced a year after he took office.

“If Anwar has challenged us to do so, it is now time. We have given him 18 months, well over a year. It’s time for us to take it to the streets and fight for our rights.

“I want this protest to be something that Anwar will remember in the history of his career,” Aidil (above), who is known on social media as YB Viral, said this in front of the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur after being questioned by the police today.

This was after Putrajaya PKR chief Fitri Aziz filed a police report on Thursday (June 20) against the organisers after the demonstration announcement was made.

Fitri was reported as saying that the rally indirectly threatens national security, labelling it as an attempt to incite the public to overthrow the government and sabotage the country’s economic recovery plans.

Eight demands

Aidil said the rally has eight demands that the Anwar administration must fulfil.

Among them are to reduce the price of diesel, allow targeted Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals, ensure that the healthcare system is taken care of, tackle the rising cost of living and give equal allocations to all MPs.

“The cause (of the rally) is bigger than us, it’s not about us. Somebody needs to stand up (to the government).

“Maybe if the opposition MPs cannot do it, then leave it to us. We have no issues. We will do it. We don’t have any political interests,” said the Umno member.

While pointing out that the rally has no political backing, Aidil welcomes the public and members of political parties to partake in the protest.

“We have activists like (Pejuang information chief) Rafique Rashid Ali and several others to join us.

“I have been told that Malacca PKR and some of Anwar’s old friends will also be coming. Some of them will speak at the rally, to remind him (Anwar) of the promises he made before,” Aidil added.
