PN mulls taking action on speaker in tit-for-tat move

PARLIAMENT | The opposition is mulling a tit-for-tat move against Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, after one of its lawmakers was referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee.

Perikatan Nasional chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan said that the matter will be studied.

“We will study the matter, but in terms of the rules, the speaker is a member of the House. Any member of the House can be referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee.

“But we will study it,” he said during a press conference.

Just minutes before, opposition MPs had walked out of the Dewan Rakyat after government MPs passed a motion to refer Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor) to the rights and privileges committee.

On Feb 28 and March 21, the Bersatu lawmaker alleged in the house that his corruption cases could be dropped if he supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

During the press conference, Muhyiddin Yassin (PN-Pagoh) also expressed his disappointment with Johari for allowing it to happen.

“This is a move that is unfair, not just unfair but also illegal,” the PN chairperson said.

Johari has the power to take any other step such as postponing the motion instead of bulldozing his way, Muhyiddin added.

‘Motion disrupting court process’

Wan Saiful explained that he had originally brought up the allegations so that the committee could investigate them.

He said it was unfortunate that the contents of his complaint were used to investigate him instead.

The motion was also disrupting the court process in his corruption case as he was forced to attend the Dewan Rakyat proceedings today and tomorrow instead of his hearings, he added.

“I was forced to be in the Dewan (Rakyat) because of the motion that was brought.

“If you want to talk about disrupting the court process, then this motion is disrupting the court process,” he told the media.
