Certainly it signals an impasse. Dr M in his 22 year rule has cleared many possible grey areas or closed avenues where the Rulers and the King could wield political power over ministers (appointments) and Parliament (law-making). The judiciary under Mahathir had also allowed these inroads into what may have been safeguards or checks and balances.

I am not so sure that there are no uncharted waters left here. Time will tell and certainly in situations where the Malay Rulers and the King have the support of the people, anything is still possible.

Peter Ooi: It may be true that the Rulers' decision may not be binding on the PM. But , as far as this issue is concerned, he better has to heed the Rulers' advice because among the Rulers is a former very learned and righteous judge and Lord President.

I am sure HRH Raja Azlan Shah knows the happenings in the judiciary very well since he was the head once. Thus, their rejection of PM's choice of Chief Justice of Malaya is not done without a thought.
