PARLIAMENT | All outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students who scored 10As and above but have yet to have spots on the government’s matriculation programme will get their offers by next month.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said this in her speech at the Parliament’s special chambers this afternoon.

According to Fadhlina, the ministry has received a total of 4,877 applications from SPM students with outstanding results.

From the number, 3,684 of them have been offered spots during the first intake of matriculation students this year, of which 2,496 are bumiputera and 1,188 non-bumiputera.

She said 400 others had been offered to enrol in the matriculation programme in the second intake after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement on June 30, where he assured that all SPM students who scored 10As and above would get to enter the programme.

Of the 400, 33 of them are bumiputera while 367 are non-bumiputera, Fadhlina said.

“To answer the question of what actions the ministry is taking to fulfil the PM’s promise, the balance of 10As SPM scorers will be offered (to enrol in matriculation) in stages, and we will ensure each one of them gets the offer.

“You are the first to hear this from the education minister, that all of them will be receiving offers.

“So, the remaining 10A students whose applications were rejected previously will be given the opportunity to enrol in the matriculation programme.

“This will be done latest by the third week of August,” she said.

The Nibong Tebal MP was responding to a motion by Chong Chieng Jen (Harapan-Stampin) on the matriculation enrolment issue, which was debated at the special chambers.

On June 30, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the lifting of the racial barrier for high-achieving non-Malay students to pursue studies in the matriculation programme.

Following the announcement, several political leaders and NGOs reported that 10As SPM scorers still missed out on matriculation placements, after the outcome of matriculation enrollment appeals was announced on July 5.

The matriculation programme allocates 90 percent of its spots to bumiputera students, reserving the remaining 10 percent for non-bumiputera.
